Agapanthus Cool Steel™ 140MM

Agapanthus hybrid 'AG03' 'Cool Steel™'

I am Agapanthus Cool Steel™. My family originated from southern Africa.

Habit Strappy - Long flowering window
Plant family Amaryllidaceae
I am a compact clumping perennial that produces dense, ball-shaped blue flower heads up to 200mm in diameter. My blooms are prolific from spring to summer, with up to 30 large flower clusters per plant that are a magnet for butterflies and bees. I am a great option for dry gardens or tropical gardens in a cooler climate. Hardy I cope well with disease and am drought, frost and humidity tolerant. I grow best in a full to part sun position. Deadhead my flowers to maintain my tidy appearance. To keep me looking good, apply a slow release fertiliser in spring and cut my foliage every 3-5 years.
Caution: Harmful if eaten. Skin and eye irritant. Weed note: Some councils list all Agapanthus as weeds. This variety isn't named on their lists. Other councils recommend it, so check your own council's list. See Council planting lists below for growing tips.

If you'd like to grow it

  • Cut off spent flower stems before the seed heads ripen, so seed can't spread.
  • Put seed heads, fruit and cuttings in the green waste bin, not the home compost.
  • Never dump garden waste in bushland, parks or near creeks.
  • It is lower risk in town gardens, courtyards and pots well away from bushland and waterways. Avoid planting it on properties that border bushland, creeks or farmland.

If you're unsure, ask your local council before planting, especially on a property next to bushland.

From each council's website, checked 27 Oct 2026. Councils update their lists from time to time, so check the source before planting on council land or for a planning permit. Find your council's lists
